Treating Eye Diseases Is Our Business
Eye diseases can vary in their causes, the parts of the eye they attack and the specific effects they create, but some of them can destroy your eyesight if you ignore them. You never want to let an eye disease go untreated — and that’s why you need to visit Broadway Vision Center at 170th, where treating eye diseases is one of the things our New York optometrist, Dr. Gold, does best.
Eye diseases can range from annoying or irritating you to causing permanent blindness. Here are some prime examples of such diseases — and the methods our Washington Heights optometry center uses to treat them.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is an infection of the membrane between the eyelid and the cornea. We can prescribe medications, soothing eye drops and a self-care program to help you get over this uncomfortable (and sometimes highly contagious) problem.
Dry eye
Dry eye is a chronic irritation syndrome caused by an inadequate layer of protective, hydrating tear film. We can isolate the underlying causes of your dryness, recommending lifestyle changes to help you control environment factors. We can also prescribe eye drops to help you keep your eyes moisturized.
Computer vision
This syndrome, which features red, dry, itchy eyes, is caused by spending too much time staring at the bright glare of computer or mobile device screens. We can prescribe tinted lenses to reduce glare, issue eye drops, and recommend routines to ensure that you blink more frequently to encourage tear production.
Glaucoma
A disease in which poor eye drainage causes high intraocular pressure, which in turn permanently damages the optic nerves. Treatment methods include medicated eye drops, oral medications and a possible referral to a laser eye surgeon to improve your eye drainage.
Diabetic eye disease
Destruction of the tiny blood vessels in the eye caused by excess blood sugar, leading to bleeding in the eye and vision loss. Controlling the diabetes comes first, but we can also prescribe healthy dietary measures and possible laser surgery to control intraocular bleeding.
Macular degeneration
This age-related problem robs you of your central vision by slowly destroying a retinal structure called the macula. Early-stage macular degeneration may respond to dietary and lifestyle changes; advanced macular degeneration may call for injectable medications or a referral for laser therapy.
Cataracts
An opacity of the intraocular lens that causes low, blurred, distorted vision. We can compensate with corrective lenses for a while, and then co-manage your cataract removal surgery via pre-operative and post-operative care.
Hypertensive retinopathy
Damage to the retinal blood vessels caused by chronic high blood pressure. Our Washington Heights optometry center will alert you to this condition so you and your doctor can get your blood pressure down.
